4.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Uttarakhand

A moderate earthquake struck Uttarakhand late Tuesday night, sending tremors across Delhi-NCR and parts of northern India. Indian authorities recorded the quake at magnitude 4.9, while an international monitoring agency initially estimated it at 5.1.

Uttarakhand Earthquake Hits Chamoli District

The earthquake struck at around 10:23 pm on October 6, with the epicentre located in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.

India’s National Center for Seismology recorded the earthquake at magnitude 4.9 and a depth of around 13 kilometres. The event was later marked as reviewed by the agency.

An international monitoring centre separately measured the quake at magnitude 5.1 and a depth of about 10 kilometres, accounting for the difference in early magnitude reports.

Tremors Felt Across Delhi-NCR

Strong tremors were felt across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and several other parts of northern India.

Residents in high-rise buildings reported feeling noticeable shaking, with some people stepping outside as a precaution.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage following the earthquake.

Himalayan Region Remains Seismically Active

Uttarakhand lies in a highly active Himalayan seismic zone and regularly experiences earthquakes of varying intensity.

Chamoli and neighbouring districts have recorded several earthquakes in the past, prompting authorities to repeatedly emphasise earthquake-resistant construction and disaster preparedness.

Officials are continuing to assess the affected areas for any damage following Tuesday night’s tremors.
