Firefighter Killed As Bushfires Hit NSW And Tasmania
A 59-year-old firefighter died after being struck by a falling tree while battling a bushfire north of Sydney near Bulahdelah, officials confirmed. The incident happened overnight as emergency crews worked to contain dozens of fires burning across New South Wales and Tasmania.
Authorities called the loss a tragic reminder of the risks faced by frontline responders during Australia’s fire season.
Homes Destroyed And Evacuations Ordered
On the NSW Central Coast, fast-moving flames destroyed at least 16 homes. More than 50 fires were active across the state, forcing residents to evacuate and stretching firefighting resources.
In Tasmania, a large blaze near Dolphin Sands burned through 700 hectares, destroying 19 homes and damaging around 40 more. Although the fire has now been contained, authorities warned that unsafe conditions remain in the affected areas.
National Response And Tribute
Australia’s Prime Minister expressed condolences to the firefighter’s family and thanked emergency crews working in dangerous conditions. More than 500 personnel and 160 vehicles have been deployed to tackle the blazes.
With extreme heat and dry weather expected in the coming days, fire danger remains high. Officials urged residents to stay alert and follow safety instructions.
