Egypt Backs France’s Call to Halt Arms Exports to Israel
Egypt has welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s call to halt the export of arms to Israel, citing concerns over the Israeli military’s violations of international law and humanitarian norms in Gaza and Lebanon. This development comes amid rising tensions and increased civilian casualties in both conflict zones, with many of the victims reported to be women and children.
Egypt Calls for Immediate Ceasefire
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed its support for Macron’s stance, highlighting the serious breaches of international law committed by the Israeli military in recent weeks. The ministry called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, stressing the need for the international community to pay heed to the French President’s appeal.
The Egyptian government reiterated its condemnation of the attacks that have resulted in tens of thousands of civilian casualties and widespread destruction. It urged global powers to step in and ensure that military support to Israel is halted to prevent further escalation and loss of innocent lives.
France and UK Take Firm Stance
France’s call to stop arms exports to Israel follows similar measures taken by the United Kingdom, which recently suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel in response to the ongoing Gaza conflict. Macron’s position on halting military aid is seen as a move to pressure Israel into de-escalating the conflict and adhering to international laws that protect civilians in war-torn areas.
Support for Palestinian Statehood
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry also emphasized its appreciation for France’s support of Palestinian rights and the two-state solution. Egypt reiterated its backing for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967, borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This position aligns with international resolutions advocating for a peaceful resolution to the decades-long conflict.
Egypt’s endorsement of Macron’s stance reflects its commitment to regional stability and its advocacy for Palestinian statehood, as well as its role in international diplomacy in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and Lebanon.
