20 Dead as Bus Catches Fire in Kurnool
A major road tragedy struck Andhra Pradesh early Friday when a private Volvo bus travelling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught fire after colliding with a motorcycle near Chinna Tekur village in Kurnool district.
How the Accident Happened
The crash occurred around 3 a.m. on National Highway 44. Officials said the two-wheeler was dragged under the bus and ruptured the fuel tank, sparking a massive blaze. Many of the 40–44 passengers on board were asleep when the fire broke out, making escape difficult.
Rescue and Casualties
At least 20 people have been confirmed dead, while several others sustained injuries. Survivors were rushed to the Kurnool Government General Hospital. Fire services reached the spot but the rapid spread of flames trapped many inside the bus, with reports suggesting that wiring issues and jammed doors worsened the situation.
Relief and Government Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured from the PM National Relief Fund. The Andhra Pradesh government also assured full support to survivors and families.
Probe Underway
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into safety lapses, including the bus’s emergency exits and fire safety compliance. A helpline has been issued for victims’ families, while state authorities coordinate relief measures.
