15 Indian Tourists Killed in Vietnam Boat Accident

At least 15 Indian tourists were killed after a speedboat capsized near Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island on Saturday. The vessel was carrying 36 people, including 32 Indian tourists and four crew or support staff, when it overturned shortly after leaving an island destination.

Indian Tourists Killed Near Phu Quoc Island

The speedboat was travelling from Hon May Rut Ngoai Island towards An Thoi Port when it capsized less than half a kilometre from the shore.

Authorities said 21 people survived the accident, while the bodies of all 15 victims were recovered. The fatalities reportedly included 13 men and two women.

Nearby tourist boats rushed towards the overturned vessel after passengers and witnesses called for help. Some victims were reportedly trapped inside the boat, making the rescue operation more difficult.

Rough Seas Hamper Vietnam Rescue Operation

Strong winds, high waves and rough sea conditions were reported around the time of the accident. However, Vietnamese authorities have not officially confirmed the precise cause of the capsize.

Survivors were taken ashore for medical treatment, with some passengers reported to have suffered serious injuries.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ordered an investigation into the accident and directed authorities to examine whether maritime safety requirements had been followed.

Indian Embassy Opens Emergency Control Rooms

The Indian Embassy in Vietnam said it was coordinating with local authorities and monitoring rescue and recovery operations.

Emergency response centres were established in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to assist the affected families and provide information about the victims.

Officials are also working to complete identification procedures and arrange the repatriation of the deceased. Phu Quoc, located in southern Vietnam, is a popular destination for island tours and speedboat excursions.
