13 Arrested in Hong Kong Fire Probe
Hong Kong police have arrested 13 people on suspicion of manslaughter after a massive fire tore through an apartment complex in Tai Po, marking one of the city’s deadliest residential disasters in decades. The blaze spread rapidly through multiple towers, leaving at least 151 people dead and dozens still missing as search operations continue.
Unsafe Renovation Materials Under Scrutiny
Investigators said the fire intensified because of unsafe renovation materials used on the building’s exterior. Flammable green nylon netting and foam insulation failed to meet fire-retardant standards, allowing flames to spread quickly across floors. Authorities also found that some fire alarms did not activate, raising concerns over maintenance lapses.
Rescue Teams Continue Search
Emergency teams are still working inside burnt-out blocks, where bodies have been recovered from apartments, stairwells and rooftops. Officials warned that the final death toll could rise as recovery efforts progress.
Growing Public Pressure for Accountability
Residents and community groups are demanding a full investigation into construction practices and regulatory oversight. Authorities have promised a detailed inquiry, while families of victims continue to seek answers about how the fire escalated so quickly.
