11 Army Jawans Missing in Uttarakhand Floods
Flash floods triggered by a cloudburst hit Dharali village in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, on August 5. The sudden surge of water caused the Kheerganga River to overflow, sweeping through the region and damaging several homes, roads, shops, and parts of the Harsil Army camp.
Casualties and Damage Reported
At least five people have died, and over 100 individuals are reported missing following the disaster. So far, more than 190 people have been rescued, with evacuation efforts still ongoing. Continuous rain, mudslides, and poor road access are hampering rescue work in the flood-hit areas.
11 Army Personnel Unaccounted For
Among those missing are 11 Indian Army jawans, believed to have been stationed near the affected Harsil Army camp. Search operations are being carried out by joint teams of the Army, NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, and local authorities. Army helicopters and engineers are involved in ongoing rescue and search missions.
Government Takes Stock of the Situation
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the flood-hit region and directed officials to prioritize rescue operations. He assured all affected families of government assistance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and stated that the central government is fully supporting the state’s relief efforts.
Concerns Over Climate and Preparedness
The incident highlights the growing threat posed by cloudbursts and flash floods in ecologically sensitive regions like Uttarakhand. Experts point to climate change and unplanned infrastructure as contributing factors behind the increasing intensity of such events.
Rescue Operations Ongoing
With several areas still waterlogged and isolated, rescue teams are racing against time amid unpredictable weather. Authorities remain on high alert, and further rainfall could worsen the situation. The full scale of damage is still being assessed.
